Wednesday, Sept. 8 – Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi will present its sixth annual “State of the University” luncheon Wednesday, Sept. 8, from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the American Bank Center, Henry Garrett Ballroom. University President Flavius C. Killebrew will discuss the growth and development of Texas A&M-Corpus Christi and share University news and information that has an impact on the Coastal Bend. Proceeds from the luncheon benefit students at Texas A&M-Corpus Christi through the Achieve Partnership scholarship program. Individual tickets are $50. Tables are also available. Wednesday, Sept. 15 Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi President Flavius Killebrew will be honored at the Hispanic Women’s Network of Texas (HWNT) Corpus Christi Chapter’s 11th annual Stars “Las Estrellas” Gala on Wednesday, Sept. 15, from 6-9:30 p.m. at the Corpus Christi Omni Bayfront Hotel, Corpus Christi Ballroom. Commissioner Betty Jean Longoria will also be honored. The public is invited to help in the challenge to “BOLD the Future for our City-Corpus Christi.” Proceeds will be used to maximize Corpus Christi’s educational institutions, and one non-profit organization that extends a helping hand to all in their time of need.  Saturday, Sept. 25 – The Office of Community Outreach will offer an eight-hour “Essentials of Kayak Touring” course designed to teach beginners how to become a proficient kayaker in one day and provide advanced techniques to experienced kayakers from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 25. Kayakers will learn about the proper selection and usage of safety equipment; kayaking terminology; how to identify and reduce risks; trip planning; kayaks and paddles; carrying, launching and boarding a kayak; balancing, maneuvering and controlling a kayak on the water; “rules of the road;” and rescue and safety. Beginning paddlers will receive instruction on how to safely kayak on lakes, calm protected ocean environments and other flat-water settings. Experienced kayakers will learn advanced paddling techniques and other skills to help enhance their enjoyment and safety on the water. Participants must be 18 or older; or 14-17 if accompanied by a parent. Registration deadline is Friday, Sept. 17. The cost is $100 per person, which includes the use of top quality boats, paddles and lifejackets for the day. Through Sunday, Sept. 5 – “100 American Ceramics from the Collection of the San Angelo Museum of Fine Arts,” an exhibition celebrating the vitality of the American contemporary ceramic movement is on display through Sunday, Sept. 5, at the Art Museum of South Texas, 1902 N. Shoreline Blvd. The 100 ceramic pieces in the exhibition are drawn from the permanent art collection of the San Angelo Museum of Fine Arts in San Angelo, Texas. Included are works by Corpus Christi artists Gail Busch, Louis Katz and William Wilhelmi. The Art Museum of South Texas is affiliated with Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi. Through Monday, Sept. 6 – The Art Museum of South Texas (AMST), 1902 N. Shoreline Blvd., will offer free admission to military families this summer as part of the Blue Star Museums program sponsored by the National Endowment for the Arts. The free admission program is available to any active duty military (Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines, Coast Guard), National Guard and Reserve members, and their immediate family. By participating, AMST joins more than 750 museums from all 50 states in a demonstration of support and appreciation for active duty military personnel and their families. The program runs through Labor Day on Monday, Sept. 6. The Art Museum is affiliated with Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi.
